This northern city in Spain’s Basque Country sits in the middle of a beautiful valley with incredible views of the city and its rolling hills. Visit the cities old town, Casco Viejo, for authentic pintxos (small snacks) and to explore Parque Etxebarria where you'll find some of Bilbao's best vistas. Ride the Funicular de Artxanda for even more spectacular panoramas. No visit would be complete without checking out the world-renowned Guggenheim Museum Bilbao pictured above and other local cultural institutions including the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao.

Nestled within the mountain ranges of the north, Bilbao is a very tony city with many well healed residents. Having reimagined itself from an industrial past, the city springs alive with festivals, high end shopping and gastronomy. Walking along the river or passing through the city streets, including taking the tram to the ocean, provides for days of discovery and joy. You can either fly to their nearby airport or take the four plus hour train from Madrid. If you drive, be prepared for traversing some of the most beautiful yet challenging mountain roads.
